Prayer: Talking with God, Not at Him
Introduction
If salvation is the door to relationship with God, then prayer is the conversation that grows it. Too often, new believers think prayer has to sound fancy, formal, or follow a perfect script. But that’s not how God works. He’s not impressed with big words. He’s drawn to honest hearts.
What Is Prayer, Really?
Prayer is not just “talking to God” — it’s talking with God. That means:
– You speak.
– He listens.
– He responds (sometimes with words, often through peace, Scripture, or conviction).
Jesus prayed often — not because He had to, but because He wanted to. Even when He was busy, He slipped away to spend time with the Father (Luke 5:16 NCV).
Why Should We Pray?
1. Because God wants to hear from us.
2. Because it changes us.
3. Because we’re commanded to.
How Should We Pray?
Jesus gave a pattern in Matthew 6:9–13 — what we call “The Lord’s Prayer.” But that wasn’t meant to be recited mindlessly. It was a model. Here’s a breakdown:
Our Father in heaven… – Call Him what He is — your loving Father.
Your name be honored… – Worship Him.
Give us the food we need… – Bring your needs.
Forgive us… – Be honest.
Don’t let us be tempted… – Ask for strength.
Common Prayer Acronyms
ACTS: Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication
PRAY: Praise, Repent, Ask, Yield
Prayer Is a Two-Way Street
Prayer isn’t just talking — it’s listening. After you pray, pause. Open your Bible. God often highlights verses or gives peace. You may not hear an audible voice, but you’ll learn to recognize Holy Spirit’s nudge.
When Should You Pray?
In the morning, before meals, before decisions, when stressed, before sleep.
‘Never stop praying.’ – 1 Thessalonians 5:17 (NCV)
Final Thought
Don’t wait until you ‘feel spiritual’ to pray. Just be real. Whisper or shout, journal or speak. God hears and loves every word.
Call to Salvation
If you’ve never started a relationship with God — prayer is where it begins. Speak from your heart:
‘Father, I want to know You. Thank You for loving me. I believe Jesus died for my sins and rose again. Please forgive me, save me, and teach me to follow You. In Jesus’ name, amen.’
If you prayed that, welcome to the family!
