The Armor’s Missing Back: Face Forward
Listen to:
“That is why you need to put on God’s full armor. Then on the day of evil you will be able to stand strong. And when you have finished the whole fight, you will still be standing.” — Ephesians 6:13 (NCV)
Armor for the Front, Not the Back
Paul describes the armor of God in Ephesians 6:
– The belt of truth (v.14)
– The breastplate of righteousness (v.14)
– The shoes of readiness from the gospel of peace (v.15)
– The shield of faith (v.16)
– The helmet of salvation (v.17)
– The sword of the Spirit—the Word of God (v.17)
Every piece is designed to face forward. None covers the back. Why? Because believers aren’t called to retreat. The safest place is not in running, but in standing firm.
Lesson: The armor assumes we will face the fight—not flee from it.
Why No Protection Behind You?
When soldiers turn their backs, they expose their most vulnerable side. Spiritually, the same is true. Retreat happens when we forget the basics—when prayer fades, when Scripture is neglected, when obedience slips.
That’s why Paul repeats: “Put on the full armor of God so that you can stand against the devil’s tricks.” (Ephesians 6:11 NCV).
Lesson: The moment we turn back, we step out from under God’s protection.
Standing Firm in the Fight
The command is clear: “Stand.” Not charge. Not retreat. Stand.
– Stand in truth — when lies swirl (John 8:32).
– Stand in righteousness — when compromise looks easy (Romans 6:13).
– Stand in readiness — always ready to share the gospel (1 Peter 3:15).
– Stand in faith — lifting the shield against fiery darts (1 John 5:4).
– Stand in salvation — knowing your identity is secure (Romans 8:1).
– Stand with the Word — your offensive weapon (Hebrews 4:12).
Lesson: Standing firm is not passive—it’s active, rooted, and immovable.
The Enemy at Your Back
The enemy may attack from behind, but even then, God has you covered.
– “The glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.” (Isaiah 58:8 NCV)
– “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.” (Psalm 23:6 NKJV)
God Himself protects your back. Your job is to stay facing forward.
Lesson: You were never meant to cover yourself—you were meant to trust the One who covers you.
Experience Isn’t a Pass to Retreat
Just like David after victory, or Peter after boldness, or the Galatians after starting strong—experience can make us careless. We start thinking, “I’ve fought enough battles, I can ease up.”
But easing up means turning around. And once you turn, the armor doesn’t cover you anymore.
Lesson: Experience doesn’t excuse retreat. Obedience demands forward faith.
Closing Thought
The armor of God teaches us to face forward. No armor covers your back because God never designed you to run. He designed you to stand.
The enemy may come, but you are called to face him fully armored, fully dependent, and fully unmovable.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for giving me armor to stand strong in You. Help me never retreat or turn my back on the battle. Keep me clothed in truth, righteousness, faith, salvation, and Your Word. Be my rear guard, and help me face forward in every fight. Amen.
